Plans are now firming up for the 2008 ASEASUK conference, which will be held from Saturday 21 - Sunday 22 June 2008 at John Moores University in Liverpool . Information on panels can now be found on the ASEASUK website http://mercury.soas.ac.uk/aseasuk/2008_aseasuk_conference.htm and we will soon have information available on conference fees, accomodation arrangements and the preliminary programme.
As usual, I will be convening a panel on Indonesian/Malay manuscript studies. If you would like to present a paper, please send me your provisional title and abstract by 31 January 2008 . A list of those who have expressed interest in appended below.
As in previous years, ASEASUK may be able to assist with travel costs and conference fees for one or two paper presenters from Southeast Asia for each panel; the final decision will be made by the ASEASUK Committee. If you wish to apply for financial assistance, please let me know as soon as possible, together with your paper title and abstract, which will be submitted to the Committee for consideration.
Indonesian/Malay manuscript studies.

Papers are welcomed on all aspects of the study of the writing traditions of maritime Southeast Asia . Of particular interest would be contributions on manuscript illumination and the art of the book; documents and chancery practice in the courts of the archipelago; Islamic manuscripts from the southern Philippines and the majority-Buddhist states of mainland Southeast Asia ; and previously undescribed manuscript collections.

The doctrine of Muhammadan Light (Nur Muhammad) according to Shaykh Abdul Rauf Ali Al-Fansuri
This paper is an attempt to explore the doctrine of Muhammadan Light according to Shaykh Abdul Rauf al-Fansuri. It will be focused on some of his works especially on Sufism like for instance Tanbih al-Mashi al-Mansub Ila Tariq al-Qushashi (Ms Jak.A. 101), Muniyyah al-I`tiqad (MS 1314, National Library of Malaysia), Shams al-Ma`rifah (Ms Jak-Mal. 287), Kifayah al-Muhtajin Ila Mashrab al-Muwahhidin al-Qa’ilin bi Wahdah al-Wujud (MS 1314, National Library of Malaysia), Daqa’iq al-Huruf (MS 1314, National Library of Malaysia) and Risalah A`yan Thabitah (MS 1314, National Library of Malaysia). The paper also discusses the terminology used by the Shaykh in order to explain the doctrine, the context of sunni sources like Qur’anic exegesis and the Prophetic traditions, and its relation with the theory of the creation in the context of Malay Sufi interpretation.
